FIREWORKS AT THE READY! THE BEST BONFIRE NIGHT IS IN THE NORTH WEST!

*** GET YOUR MATCHES AND SPARKLERS OUT - IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! ***

They say every day is a school day, so let's recap: Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes night, is an annual commemoration held on 5 November in our native Great Britain. For those who didn’t pay attention in history (smacked bum for you), Bonfire Night remembers those fabled events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his daring crew came up with an audacious plan known as the Gunpowder Plot. In a nutshell it didn’t work and the traitors were summarily arrested in possession of the explosives beneath the House of Lords. Londoners were so chuffed that King James I had survived this attempt on his life, that they lit bonfires all around the capital. Several months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act recognised a public day of thanksgiving to be held annually in celebration of the fact. After that, Bonfire Night became ‘a thing’ and even now although some of the traditions have altered a bit over time, around 400+ years later we English folk still love wrapping up warm and standing in shockingly cold weather conditions to ‘oooooh’ and ‘aaaaaah’ over massive fires and disappointingly short firework displays. A bit weird really when you think about it, but bloody good English fun! Of course, this is just a pocket guide to the history behind our fiery frolics, so if you need a more thorough grounding in 17th century power and politics, maybe pick up one of the kids’ history books, or better still, watch Gunpowder, the BBC’s gruesomely educational mini-series.
